An Electric File can make you a
faster and better technician - but not without proper education, practice
and care. Using an Electric File incorrectly can also give you a bad
reputation and have your clients running for the hills. We've
chosen, at Details, to represent the MediCool manufacturer for Electric
Files. With their array of bits, e-files and their commitment to
education and quality, we've found them to be an excellent choice in the
Professional Nail Industry.

Nail Bits:
Diamond Bits:
An adhesive is applied to the shape
of the bit, then actual diamond particles are bonded to the surface -
giving an abrasive that can be used on artificial nail surfaces.
With the correct technique and products, a few of the Diamond bits can be
safely used on the cuticle and natural nail
surfaces.
U.S. Titanium Carbide Bits: Titanium
coated, U.S.A made, Carbide Bits are the original carbide used in the nail
industry. There are cheaper import versions of carbides out there in
the industry, but the inferior metals and poor workmanship can make for a
pretty rough and short ride. You'll find that an inexpensive carbide
will be more prone to dulling as they are made with inexpensive soft
metals and because of this your sterilization or disinfection
solutions could cause them to rust. The MediCool brand of
Titanium Carbides create a sharp and long lasting bit, made in the
U.S.A. The Titanium coating gives a type of lubricity that helps to
give less heat on the nails and helps to keep the bit sharper
longer. You will find that carbides in general, will create less
heat than Diamond bits and especially Sanding Bands, (paper
sleeves). This is due to the way a Carbide refines the nail product,
a diamond abrades product and a carbide cuts product. Just like a
lil'Ginsu knife, they actually "cut" minute shavings of product, leaving
the surface smoother and in turn creating less heat. Due to the fact
that they have these sharp edges they should never be used on or near to
the natural nails. Carbide bits are mostly used by experienced
e-file technicians, as you have to have attained proper control and
excellent technique with your e-file before you should try upgrading
to this type of bit.

Swiss Carbide Bits: Swiss Carbide Bits
are an upgraded style of carbide, made from a specialized high
quality tungsten carbide metal, exclusively formulated in
Switzerland. They've created a high quality, long lasting
bit that cuts the product faster and more smoothly than regular
carbide bits. Due to their unique fluting arrangement they are safer for
use around the cuticle areas, (look for Swiss carbides that are
rounded at their tips). You'll find that a Swiss Carbide generates
the least amount of heat back on to the nail surface, compared to all the
other styles. The Swiss Carbides are available in 2 grits,
(determined by the fineness and quantity of flutes), fine-red line or
coarse-blue line, marked on the shaft. Occasionally you will see
that when the grit changes there is a slight difference in the shape
of the overall bit. More costly than their titanium coated
neighbors, but worth their weight in sharpness and
smoothness.
Pedicure Bits: There is two specific types of
Pedicure Bits, one type is autoclavable and the other can only be liquid
sanitized. The Bits for Liquid Sanitation have a sapphire grit
adhered to the bit shape - excellent for use on dry skin or
toenails. The autoclavable bits have diamond grit adhered to
the metal bit shape - they'll last longer and be sharper than their
sapphire counterparts. Callus bits can be used on dry and hardened
skin on the heel, ball and side of the feet. Your choice of bit will
depend on thickness of the callus and the area of the foot being
worked. Callus bits can make your pedicures easier and quicker to
perform with less wear and tear on the technician's hands &
arms.

Assorted Nail
Bits: One of
the most used tools in e-filing is the Mandrel with Arbor, (sanding),
Bands. The Arbor Bands come in 3 grits; fine, medium and
coarse and cannot be sanitized, (single use). A Mandrel with Band will
create the most heat on the nail, so working in quick cycles of movement,
not staying in one place is mandatory, (as it is with all bits).
Buffing bits are formed from a silicone with abrasive added in
different grits and amounts to determine the abrasiveness. The
Silicone Buffing Bits are available in fine, medium and coarse.
Buffing bits can be used on the natural nail to prep for an
artificial application. They can also be used in
grit succession to bring a shine to an acrylic nail
application. The Chamois Buffer will bring up the greatest
degree of mirror like shine, but cannot
be safely sanitized, (one per client), can be used with any
buffing oil or paste for natural nails or extension
products. Pink stone bits are available in 2 shapes, and are
mostly used in a gentle technique for prepping pedicures or for
finishing acrylic nails. The Pink Bit is actually comprised of a
pink pumice material - caution still must be used, as there is enough grit
on the stone bits to trench-in on the natural
nail.
